Our gardening plans put to the test!

When Martin Luther King said: "I have a dream......", his biggest challenge, I think was to convince his "own"people that they should have that dream too. So it is with our gardens too. Some of you who have contributed with seeds and money might have thought we have eloped and that this was all a scam, but we have been fighting big battles around here to make people see the benefit of such a garden. We have planted...and then the seeds does not get watered, we had to beg people to just clear a piece of their garden so that we could come and help them start a garden..... challenging, I'm telling you!

Then on Thursday night we went to one of the gardens and was totally disheartened to find the garden overgrown with weeds..until my eye caught something green..........could that be....no......wait, yes it is.......a MARROW!!!!! Wait, there is another one...and a butternut squash and some peppers...and potatoes and tomatoes......Oh man we were overjoyed!!!! It made the struggle so worth while...amazing!!!!!

I will post some dishes that I prepared with the marrow in the meantime here are a few pictures to just keep you updated.

Ready to start digging!!!!

Finally the rain has stopped and we can get our gardens going. First of all..a BIG thank you to everyone who has heard my plea and so kindly contributed to our project. We received dollars, seeds, prayers and a lot of virtual support. We are humbled by all of this. First we need to just clear the gardens and as you can see it is a mammoth task. We will keep you updated, but for now, we sign off with grateful hearts.....

Gardening.......the start of a brand new project....

Welcome to our new site. As you may have seen on my host site that we have decided to start a gardening project in a neighboring community that we serve. We live here in Cape Town, South Africa and have been blessed by God's grace to serve him in a wonderful place called Garden Village in Cape Town , SOUTH AFRICA. It is to be found on the outskirts of our beautiful suburb, called Pinelands. After a post on tomatoes on the 22 August 2008 we decided to assist some of the locals to start a herb and vegetable garden. It has been done for a few reasons, but the main reasons are:
-to teach people how to plant vegetables for their own use and maybe work towards an extra income.
-to change the focus in the area from drugs and alcohol to a purpose driven lifestyle
-to change stumbling blocks into stepping stones
- above all to show the little people in the neighborhood that unemployment, unhealthy life styles,HIV and substance abuse are not normal and there is a more excellent way
On this site we will keep you updated on this project. We have asked for contributions in the form of seeds or $1.00 bills or the equivalent in your currency as this will cover a packet of seeds and some compost.. So if you want to be a part of this project that will bring relief to many families, you can send us the equivilent to a dollar $1 (about R10) in an envelope or if you have spare seeds for vegetables, that will also be appreciated.
Send your contribution to: Postnet Howard Centre
Suite 5
Pinelands
7405
South Africa

Ps: As you can see, we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but many of our neighbors do not experience it that way, because of their adverse circumstances. You have enjoyed coming to My easy Cooking to appreciate what we can do with a camera and we look forward to bringing you this story as it unfolds from seed into love. You can help us make it better for them...
